|The Grand Unified Shining Theory - by Lady Moogie G.o.a.t.S. (Goddess of all things Shining!)
The problems in SitD are initiated when Melvyl betrays the King and becomes
Dark Sol. He is defeated with the Powers of Light, gleaned from the Arms of
Light (weapon and armour) discovered in the Labyrinth Proper. Given that the
into to SHF1 says that Dark Dragon was defeated and cast into another
dimension as a result of the Ancients fighting with the Power of Light, we
can assume either of the below:
1. This occurred before SitD, and following the encounter with Dark Dragon,
the Arms of Light were hidden away in the labyrinth to prevent their
unlimited power falling into the wrong hands. 1000 years after this, Shining
Force takes place.
2. Following Dark Sol's failed attempt at world domination, Dark Dragon
believes he'll be able to do it, and is defeated by the new possessor of the
Arms of Light. He vows to return in 1000 years, when Shining Force takes
Dark Dragon returns in Shining Force. Assuming option 2 is correct, the way
Darksol gives his remaining strength to Dark Dragon suggests that:
1. He was not really killed in SitD, he gave his soul to the darkness in
order to continue fighting
a. He was already in league with Dark Dragon, who took over the plan after
SitD, and when he became powerful enough he was able to bring back Darksol.
They worked together again, Dark Dragon being stronger and therefore the
leader of the pair. This explains why Darksol was willing to give up his
remaining strength to continue the plan they had begun together.
b. They were enemies (as suggested by the Storytellers in SHF2, the 3 Devil
Kings did not get along), Dark Dragon wanted to out-do Darksol by trying to
take over after SitD. Both being in another dimension (Darksol through
giving his soul to the darkness, and Dark Dragon by being cast into another
dimension), they may have been together and decided somehow to help one
another get back into the real world (perhaps also because they both hated
Zeon and wanted to get back to take over the world without him - ".The other
two kings envied Zeon."). But that was where the pact would end. Darksol
made it safely into the real world, Dark Dragon was unable to fully awaken,
hence Darksol's need to revive him to complete their pact. While awakening
Dark Dragon, the Shining Force show up and Darksol is forced to fight them
at a time when he is not truly ready (still trying to complete the pact, he
had not yet prepared for his world-takeover plan), hence his defeat.
Realising didn't have a chance, all he could do was to fulfil the pact and
allow Dark Dragon to take the world - any Dark ruler is better than the
Powers of Light, as far as he was concerned.
(note - their apparent affiliation in Shining Force Final Conflict supports
the idea that they work together)
To seal away Dark Dragon, Max remained behind with the Chaos Breaker after
the battle. The rest of the group left safely, meaning that Anri could
return home and become the Queen of Guardiana. Max is later seen arriving at
a remote village, with a robot that would appear to be Adam. He joins their
community and is not heard from again. Twenty years later, in Shining Force
CD, Anri is the Queen and still has contact with Ken, Luke and Lowe, who
helped her rebuild the kingdom from the ashes of the Runefaust invasion.
The events of Shining Force CD take place (a number of the Shining Force CD
force are related to those of the original force), and following these, a
group from the original force and a group from the Shining Force CD force
head to Parmecia in search of Max. We are told about these in Shining Force
2, by the priest in Hassan - "Our ancestors came to Parmecia to chase after
a soldier called Max. The lost his trail at the shore. And then split into
two groups. One group went back to Grans by way of Devil's tail. He wasn't
found in Parmecia, so maybe he went to Grans.". The way he says these things
indicates that this happened a long time ago, and yet there is a soldier
named Eric in Shining Force CD who may be the same Eric as in Shining Force
2. To explain this, my theory suggests that Eric was part of the group who
decided to head back to Grans by way of Devil's tail. While at Devil's Tail,
he came by Creed's mansion (Creed was still a Greater Devil in those days),
and unfortunately became part of Creed's "collection" in Desktop kingdom. A
character in Desktop Kingdom tells you in Shining Force 2 that time has no
meaning there, so it is possible that Eric remained there until discovered
in Shining Force 2. He was of course a little hairier by this time, having
travelled across Parmecia to find Max, but other than that he's still very
much the same.
Arthur was also one of the group who went in search of Max, and he appears
in SHF3. We know that Shining Force 3 takes place in Parmecia, so he may
have been one of those who settled on the mainland. But, surely he'd be dead
by the time Shining Force 3 takes place. Well, we have two options:
1. He was a part of Creed's collection too (but that would mean he wasn't in
the group that intended to stay on the mainland), but somehow escaped and
found his way to Saraband in his continuing quest to find Max.
2. Shining Force 3 actually takes place before Shining Force 2, shortly
after the soldiers come looking for Max, hence Arthur's appearance being
If option 1 is correct, then Shining Force 3 happened after Shining Force 2.
Arthur could have been in Creed's collection for quite some time - he may
have been there when you visit it in SHF2, but there's no evidence of this.
Most likely he found his way to Saraband after escaping, lived there for a
few years, and then Shining Force 3 happened soon after.
Given that in Shining Force 3, the thousand year kingdom is coming again, we
can assume it takes place at least 1000 years (any increment of 1000 is
possible!) after Shining Force, when Dark Dragon first returned after his
1000 year lurk. The way the scholars in Holy Ark talk about the 1000 year
Kingdom suggests that several occurrences may have been on record. This
makes me inclined to believe that option 1 is correct. Shining Force 3 takes
place 1000 years after SHF2, and the occurrence of Zeon in SHF2 is
considered part of the whole 1000 year Kingdom plot. So, SHF2 happens 1000
years after SHF1, and Dark Dragon's return after 1000 years is also part of
the 1000 year Kingdom plot.
If option 2 is correct, then Shining the Holy Ark also happened before
Shining Force 2 (it's 10 years before SHF3). So, Arthur left Rune about 20
years after Shining Force. Shortly after arriving at the mainland he finds
Saraband and lives there. 10 years before this, Holy Ark took place, so that
happened before Shining Force CD. Events in this order would bring them too
close together. and we need 1000 years gap between each major clash with
evil. Option 2 is therefore abandoned.
Having determined that Shining Force 3 must have happened after SHF2, we can
quickly nip back to the not-so-shining Shining Wisdom. Few links to the
other games here, we only know that it happens within the lifetime of the
SHF2 force, as Kazin and Sarah are seen together - "just friends" you know!
After SHF2 (and therefore most likely after SW), Odd Eye returns, but as a
good guy in Final Conflict. Adam from SHF1 also returns.. While I'm not sure
of the exact story behind this game, taking place soon after SHF2 would
account for Odd Eye's presence and Adam being a robot could easily show up
again. After all, he went with Max to Parmecia. Max's return in Final
Conflict is less easy to account for, although could be explained in that he
was wearing the mask of Kane. The darkness may have kept him alive so long,
or possibly he too was in Creed's collection. That's a little too convenient
This is making my head spin now, so to sum up I've done a quick chronology
of Shining Force. Note, the years are not necessarily the right numbers, I
just found working from zero and using exact thousands for the 1000 year
kingdom events a little easier. Some of the dates aren't necessarily
accurate in relation to others.ie, I don't know for sure when the Empire was
formed, but something had to go in that big gap! We don't know what year
exactly FC took place, or when Shining Wisdom happens. But, this is a good
idea of the order, and the theories above kinda explain how it all works.
Year 0000: Shining in the Darkness.
Year 0000: Dark Dragon tries to take over following Dark Sol's failure.
Year 1000: Shining Force: Dark Dragon returns to take over the world, with
Dark Sol to help.
Year 1020: Shining Force CD: Several soldiers go to Parmecia to find Max.
Year 1022: After searching for Max and failing, the group divides. Eric gets
taken into Creed's collection. Arthur may have also been in the collection.
Year 2000: Shining Force 2, Eric leaves Desktop Kingdom. Zeon awakens & is
Year 2002: Shining Force 2, Princess Elis is awakened. Kazin and Sarah
possibly get together.
Year 2005: Kazin and Sarah spotted together in Shining Wisdom.
Year 2010: Final Conflict: Odd Eye returns. Adam returns. Max returns with
Year 2300: Empire and Republic formed. (??? not entirely sure)
Year 2989: Gracia is born.
Year 2990: Shining the Holy Ark, Julian's father dies. Find out about Galm
Year 2996: Arthur leaves Desktop Kingdom & finds Saraband. Lives there until
Year 3000: Shining Force 3: 1000 Year Kingdom returns - Bulzome. Julian's
grown up. Galm and Elize make appearances.
Dark Sol, Dark Dragon and Zeon are not Vandals - they are referred to as the
three Devil Kings. Zeon was the most powerful, and the three did not get on
Given that the Vandals and Innovators are the most powerful beings, the
Devil Kings would have to be considered less powerful and therefore less
important. Below the Devil Kings are Greater Devils: Zalbard, Geshp,
Cameela, Lord Odd Eye and the ex-devil Creed.
As with all battles, no-one ever sends their strongest fighters in first. It
's possible that the Devil Kings who lived in Arc Valley lived alongside the
Vandals. Arc Valley could just be another name for the 1000 year Kingdom
("Arc Valley is a place where Evil gathers."). With the 3 Devil Kings
defeated, the Vandals then had to come down to Rune to take over.
I am sorry if you have received this multiple times. I emailled it to you but received no response, and seeing as this is the last day of the contest, I thought I should make sure you receive my essay and entry. I would like to say that I am a huge fan of the Shining series (my collection is at http://shining.zophar.net/sfc/moogie_collection.html) and would love to own a Premium Disc signed by either of these two wonderful gentlemen!
Thanks for such wonderful games, and thankyou for taking the time to read this!
